While you’re enjoying your vacation in Florida, it’s important that you do everything you can to try to make sure that you are driving safe. Here are a few things you should keep in mind as you are driving in Florida so that you can remain safe along the way.
Pay Attention to the Weather
Florida is infamous for attracting hurricanes every year. Of course, you won’t be driving when it’s at its worst, but there are still dangerous storm systems that roll through Florida. It’s important to have your vehicle thoroughly checked out before leaving home regardless of the weather. Make sure you have new wiper blades in case it rains, as it rains often in Florida. Give your belts and hoses the once over to make sure they are in good condition. Make sure that you are prepared for hot weather, too. Some parts of Florida can get into the 100s and you don’t want anything melting or cracking, tires included.
Stay Alert
Florida is rated as the second-worst state for distracted driving. Wildlife abounds and is a major cause of motor vehicle accidents up and down the state. You cannot afford for your mind to be anywhere but on your driving, especially when you’re in Florida. The sights are beautiful, but you can take them in when you stop for a break or trade driving shifts with one of your traveling companions. Maintain caution for wildlife at all times. Dusk, dawn and nighttime hours are the most dangerous for wildlife wandering out in front of your vehicle. Keep an eye on the edges of the road where deer and other animals often hang out.
Don’t Get Scammed
If you are going somewhere that is a tourist destination, you can be sure the bad guys are there, too. Take advantage of the safe in your hotel room so you won’t be carrying all of your valuables with you. The trunk of your car might be somewhat safe, but thieves can open a trunk alarm or not. Don’t take rides from anyone without verifying their ID and that they really work for the rideshare company you made arrangements with. Vacation rental and vacation package scams are probably most common in the summertime and around holidays. Check with the BBB before booking. You want to trust people and that’s an admirable quality. You need to rein in your trusting nature, though, when you’re in an unfamiliar area.
