You see, I married a lady from Italy, and the girl can find pizza anywhere. We’ve had it in Frankfort, Venice, Rome, Napoli, Bologna, Detroit, Nashville, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Asheville, Kauai, and everywhere else we’ve been in between.
Me personally? Hated a slice I had in Venice, and I think the best is from a hole-in-the-wall bar a few miles outside Detroit. She’s going to smack me when she reads that. Fortunately for us, we live in Florida, a state that fairly well emulates all the food from other places.
If I were willing to get in the car with her, we’d go to Pizza Time on St. George Street every time. If you’re here on vacation, this is the logical answer. St. George Street is on everyone’s list of places to see, and Pizza Time is right in the thick of things. It’s really good, really filling, and they have loads of choices. You will wait in line outside to get in, and even once you’ve ordered and have your food, there is no guarantee of a place to sit. They’re also cash-only, and a bit on the expensive side. Be prepared, but do be there.
My go-to choice has always been Five Star Pizza. This one just has its own deal going on. Huge pies, chock full of good stuff. The flavor here is closest to the hole-in-the-wall Detroit bar I mentioned earlier, it always takes me back. Good stuff. They deliver about anywhere, and they’re fast and efficient. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but totally worth every penny. It’s absolutely the best day-old refrigerated hangover pizza ever. The wife doesn’t care for it too much, she’s never been clear on why though. She loves their chicken wings instead, so it all balances out. This one is for delivery and pick-up only, with the pick-up location being just south of town proper on US1.
How about something a bit fancier then? V Pizza in an interesting place on the north side of St. Augustine, by our tiny regional airport. V is separated into two sides – self-service, and full service. You can eat inside or outside, where there is a wide variety of toys and games to keep everyone occupied. There are several V locations, this is the only one I’ve been to so far. The food is what you want to know about, so was it good? It is. It’s handmade and fire-baked, well-presented pizza. You will not be disappointed.
If you’re in the Crescent Beach area, you can’t go wrong with Tonys. They’ve been here longer than me, and the quality has always been great. Apart from pizza, they make great subs and other Italian meals.
St. Augustine does have all the names and flavors you’ve come to love from the Chains, Little Ceasers, Dominos, Pizza Hut, even Mellow Mushroom. But to me, being on vacation means trying the local stuff. I say that knowing damn well I had both McDonalds and KFC in Rome.
